There is a lot more to surfing than just balancing on a board, participating in competitions or strutting your stuff. There is an entire world inside of the activity, and a deep and rich culture that can seem a little strange and alien to those of us with things like bills, car payments and Energy Savings foremost on our minds. Bizarre and impenetrable at times, understanding the surfing culture is understanding a deeper and more spiritual communion with the water and the peace we can feel when we submerge ourselves in the cooling waters and wash away our troubles.

You might think they are laidback and you might think they are immature, but what you don’t realize is that they don’t care. Surfing culture is all about surfing. Surfers don’t care if they look foolish, they don’t care to impress anyone and they most certainly don’t care about the way the rest of the world perceives them and, in that, is an indomitable spirit not just of rebellion but more toward independence. Surfing and the culture, these are all about doing your thing and having fun doing what you want to do – not what others want you to do for them.

If you are just learning how to surf or if you are thinking about surfing, one of the first things you will have to do is find a surfboard that will fit your needs. Just like the waves in the ocean, no two people are alike. So different people will need a different board. In order to find the best surfboard for you, you will have to take a few things in consideration.

Price

If you are still not sure whether or not surfing will be a long term sport for you, it might be a better choice to settle with a cheaper but more reliable board. In order to find the best board, you must know how durable that board is.

Durability

Just like with anything else you buy, you must be sure that it will not break right away. Depending on the price, durability might rise as the price rises. So you will have to find the perfect balance between durability and price. If you are able to find a board that fits you at a reasonable price, you are definitely on your way to riding those waves. The last thing you will need is a few lessons and you will be set.

Surfing has been around for centuries in the Polynesian areas. The first surfboards were made of wood and were heavy and large. In 1907 George Freeth was brought from Hawaii to the United States for a publicity stunt. The new Los Angeles, Huntington Beach to Redondo Beach railroad was finished and advertising was needed. George surfed Up and down the coast and gave demonstrations of life-guarding skills as he travelled. This first introduction to surfing did not do much to improve the popularity of surfing. The sport did not become popular until the 1060′s when the surfing culture arose and the sport was on a fast track of popularity.

The popular film Gidget may have done the most to advertise this new American sport. Songs were written, about surfing and a large phenomena of clothing and hairstyles began to take place all around surfing. At this time newer and lighter surfboards were produced from fiberglass and this made surfing easier for everyone to do. The lighter boards were more maneuverable and even girls became interested in the new surfing craze.

Today surfing has come along way from the crazy craze of the surf culture years. Surfing is considered a serious sport with worldwide competitions. Equipment suppliers offer sponsorships for professional surfers and many people make their living by being professional surfing.

Surfing is a sport that you can enjoy your entire life. Age does not matter. Surfing, like playing tennis or rounds of golf, can be done well into your 70s or 80s. It all depends on how fit you are.

When most people think of surfing they are not thinking about it as a major form of exercise. Why? Surfing is all about beach culture. It is about being laid-back and chill. The mental outlook and way of life that is cultivated by most surfers is completely different from those hardcore, gym enthusiasts. Needless to say, the workout you get on a surfboard is as good as any routine at the gym.

Swimming is one of the best exercises for the body. Surfing, as it stands to reason, features a great amount of swimming. Paddling, kicking and navigating the surfboard out into the waves takes energy, muscles, and skill. It is a full-body workout. Surfing is also about balance and coordination. Once you use your strength to jump up on the board to catch wave, it is all a matter of balanced footwork and steadiness. Contrary to the laidback lifestyle it cultivates, surfing is truly a rigorous and demanding sport.

There are more and more people who want to learn how to surf. If you grew up in the sunny California, you are in luck because there are a lot of pro and amateur surfers in that state. However, if you are not as lucky as these people are, no need to fret because here are some tips on how you can learn to surf without taking even a single lesson.

You should know that the first and most important thing that you should do before you surf is to have an appropriate board. For beginners, it is highly recommended that they use a long board. You can then use a short board once you are already familiar with surfing techniques.

The best way to practice surfing is to body surf. In that way, you will be able to feel the natural rhythm of the waves as they touch your body. Once you are able to stand up on your board, it is then the best time to go straight to the ocean. However, you should keep in mind that balance is important. You should keep your back foot on the fin or the end of the board, while you should place your front foot on the middle of the board.
