Surfing Techniques: It’s All About Balance

Surfing is a thrilling and personally rewarding sport. If you want to start surfing or improve your surfing skills, then you need to improve your balance. Balance is vitally important for surfing, and here are some few tips you can follow to improve your overall balance.

First thing to do is make a mental commitment that you want to improve you balance, and your surfing skills altogether. This means that you need to grab that surfboard even if its not surfing season. During the off-season, you still need to grab the board, and paddle the seas at least once each week. Each paddle session can be about 10-20 minutes. This exercise will help stimulate your muscles that you will use for surfing, making it stronger, and at the same time developing your control over those muscles. Better control translates to better balance on the surfboard.

Do not forget to stretch. Stretching before any strenuous physical activity is very important. Stretching will decrease the chance of pulling a muscle, and injuring yourself in the process. Constant stretching also improves your flexibility. Flexibility is undervalued, but a great flexible body muscles means significantly improved balance. One of the best surfers in the world has very flexible bodies. This is not surprising since surfing consist a lot of rotation, twist, turn and flex, and a flexible body helps a lot. Additionally, you can improve your flexibility by doing simple yoga sessions.

Adopt a muscle-building program. The whole point of this program is to make your body stronger. As your body gains muscle mass, and gets stronger, your control over those muscle also improves, and muscle control is very important to make those minute necessary adjustments to maintain a good balance. You do not need to lift heavy weights, or need to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger, but you do need the right weights and more repetitions.
